Help! My computer is frozen. What should I do?

The first thing to do is restart the computer. Often, this will fix things. If you can't move the mouse or shutting down normally doesn't work, holding down the power button for 8 seconds will often do the trick. Once it reboots, see if doing the same thing you had done before causes it to freeze again. If it does, give us a call or send us an email.

I cannot get online. Is there something I should do before calling you?

If you're on an ethernet connection, check your ethernet cord's connection to both your computer and the wall. The ethernet cord looks a bit like a phone cord, only slightly larger. If you're on a wireless connection, restart your computer and see if that helps. If these suggestions don't work or are too confusing, give us a call and we'd be glad to help you.

My computer will not turn on! Is it broken?

First, make sure that you're turning on your computer's power button. If you have one of the newer Dell desktop PCs, there's a button on the screen and a button on either the left or right side of the box behind the screen. This second button, on the box behind the screen, is the actual computer's power button, and the one you should be using to turn the computer on.

I don't think I'm getting all my emails, is there a way to check this?

The first thing to do is either go to your cMail or xMail account (http://webmail.uchicago.edu or http://xmail.uchicago.edu respectively) and see if the emails you're missing are there. If they are not, check your junkmail account (http://junkmail.uchicago.edu) and if you use a desktop email client, your spam folder. If the emails aren't in these places, but you're still having trouble, contact us.
